Recording local biodiversity
Since we moved to the Sunshine Coast we have fallen in love with the local biodiversity. Walks in the forest, along the beach, even in the yard become hunts for new plants, fungi, or other creatures. My daughters have even become experts at (safely) identifying mushrooms. Of course, as a science nerd, I had to find a way to increase the nerd-factor and use technology to augment these outings. Luckily I discovered iNaturalist, which allows you to take photos of different organisms and get taxonomic insights through AI and other users. Another really cool part of this platform is that photos can be labelled “research grade” and be used to improve the identification algorithm as well as in various research projects.
